Our Story

The Beatrix Farrand Garden Association (BFGA) stewards the ideas and legacy of Beatrix Farrand as expressed through her garden at Bellefield.

Farrand was a pioneering landscape architect – or as she preferred to call herself, a landscape gardener. One of the only women practicing landscape architecture in the early 1900s, Farrand completed numerous commissions for public and private enjoyment. This garden is her earliest surviving residential work, built for her cousins, the Newbold family.

BFGA began as a group of dedicated volunteers and scholars, who worked tirelessly to restore and reopen the interior walled garden at Bellefield in the early 1990s. Beginning in 2023, BFGA added an exterior “Wild” garden that was part of Farrand’s original vision for the site. BFGA continues to operate and maintain the gardens at Bellefield as an independent nonprofit located on the campus of the Home of Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic Site. This year, we are embarking on yet another monumental phase in our journey–bringing the Walled Garden closer to Farrand’s vision while rebalancing our approach to meet the demands of this new moment. Learn about our momentous Rejuvenation project HERE and become part of the next chapter of our story.

Every day, we welcome the community to learn about Farrand’s remarkable life and career. The garden is open for visitors to explore at their own pace, seeing Farrand’s genius first-hand. Throughout the year, concerts, talks, workshops and lectures offer more ways to experience the garden, ensuring the space is always full of beauty and life – just as Farrand intended.
