Our Story

The Beatrix Farrand Garden Association (BFGA) is the independent nonprofit organization that stewards the ideas and legacy of Beatrix Farrand as expressed through her garden at Bellefield.

The garden is located within the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site and BFGA is proud to serve as a Park Partner with the National Park Service. However, the garden itself is not funded or maintained by the NPS. Every aspect of the garden’s care, restoration, and public programming is made possible through the generosity of individual donors, members, foundations, and volunteers. Community support is essential to keeping this historic landscape alive and accessible to the public.

Beatrix Farrand was a pioneering landscape architect—or as she preferred to call herself, a landscape gardener. One of the only women practicing landscape architecture in the early 1900s, Farrand completed numerous commissions for both public and private enjoyment. The garden at Bellefield is her earliest surviving residential design, created for her cousins, the Newbold family.

BFGA began in the early 1990s as a group of dedicated volunteers and scholars who worked tirelessly to restore and reopen the interior Walled Garden at Bellefield. Their grassroots effort transformed a neglected historic space into a vibrant public garden once again.

Beginning in 2023, BFGA expanded the landscape with the creation of an exterior Wild Garden, reviving an important element of Farrand’s original vision for the site. Today, BFGA continues to operate, maintain, and interpret the gardens entirely through private support, welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

Now, we are embarking on another important phase in our journey—the Rejuvenation of the Walled Garden, a major initiative that will bring the garden closer to Farrand’s original design while ensuring it can thrive for future generations. We invite you to learn about this momentous project and become part of the next chapter of the garden’s story.

Every day, we welcome the community to discover Farrand’s remarkable life and career. Visitors can explore the garden at their own pace, experiencing her design vision firsthand. Throughout the year, concerts, talks, workshops, and lectures offer new ways to engage with the garden, ensuring the space remains full of beauty, learning, and life—just as Farrand intended.
