Monarda bradburiana - Bradbury's Beebalm
Full Sun to Part Shade
Dry and rocky to medium soil
This petite, early-blooming beebalm, native to areas slightly West and South of us, brings early color to the garden in late May and June. A favorite among garden designers and a featured plant on the West side of the Wild Garden, it features a compact cluster of purple-tinged leaves that make a nice contrast with neighboring plants as it emerges in spring.
Bradbury’s beebalm’s detailed flower buds look a bit like “Hattie’s pincushions,” or masterwort flowers, before they open into pale lilac blooms atop wine-colored leaf bracts. Their intricate seedheads also remain showy after blooming. Beneficial to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Aromatic leaves are deer-resistant and can be used in teas. What more could you ask for?
