Aquilegia canadensis - Shooting Star / Wild Columbine
Adaptable - Sun to Shade
Dry to Moist (not wet) Soils
Might we suggest that any garden in the Hudson valley should include this adaptable plant? Featuring a very long bloom time in early- to mid- spring, hummingbirds co-evolved with this plant and follow the timing of its blooming in their migration North each spring. A myriad of other pollinators enjoy it, and it is an iconic member of our ecological community.
Beautifully delicate, fluttering leaves are very early to emerge in spring and can last all season long as a gorgeous foliage texture with adequate watering (they will go dormant if left to dry out in a drought). The leaves are not eaten by deer but are host to the Columbine Duskywing Butterfly.
Gently reseeding, and a beautiful companion to other part-shade native plants. Blend colors carefully, as this is a vibrant red-and-yellow, “hot” colored plant!
