This elegant native plant was used by Beatrix Farrand in her planting designs 130 years ago. It has been growing in our “Blush, Cream, and Silver” border in the Walled Garden at Bellefield since the restoration in 1993.
Thalictrums feature beautiful, blue-green leaves that flutter on the slightest breeze, and this special species sends up a 3 - 7’ tower of creamy-white tassel-shaped flowers in May and June with no need for staking. Male flowers attract pollinators, and leaves provide important forage for many caterpillars.
Amazingly, even today, this plant is nearly impossible to find in the horticultural trade - a rarity available only at native plant nurseries. This just goes to show how very far ahead of her time Farrand was in her use of native plants! We’re so excited to offer it from a local Hudson Valley grower.
